Giants Causeway masterpiece painted by our wonderful residents
25th September 2017
We love helping our residents express themselves and using art is amongst their favourite ways of doing so!
Once again our talented residents are showing off their creativity skills with this wonderful adaptation of the Giants Causeway. It’s a proud landmark of the north coast and a place our residents hold deep in their heart. For those who aren’t aware, the Giants Causeway was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and is situated on the wild North Atlantic Ocean – just 20 minutes away from Ratheane Nursing Home. How lucky are our residents to live so close to such a breath taking landmark!
It is said to be the result of an ancient volcanic eruption but we like to believe the legend that it was actually built by an Irish giant Finn MacCool. The columns are said to be the remains of a causeway Finn MacCool built to get across the North Channel to reach Scottish giant Benadonner for a battle. Whether you believe the fact or fiction, it’s still an astonishing attraction and that’s why our artistic residents chose to paint it.
The fantastic activities therapist Evelyn Joyce conducted the masterpiece with the residents taking part in painting the feature. It’s mounted proudly in the home for everyone to admire, and we must admit, it is very pleasing on the eye.
Art has so many beneficial qualities – especially in care homes, it promotes self awareness and expression, decreases stress and depression, facilitates socialisation and communication and improves cognitive skills. We encourage art throughout all of our care homes as a result of these wonderful benefits. From extravagant art work like this one, to smaller more personal pieces, our residents thrive from painting and expressing their creative side. Helping to maintain and expand their skills and abilities is at the forefront of our minds.
