Ratheane’s first ever Sound of Music Musical!

5th December 2017

Coleraine was alive with the sound of music when Breta Morrison starred in her very own Sound of Music show in Ratheane Nursing Home.

On first arrival to the home, Breta was quite the introvert, very quiet, often sad and rather hard to understand when she spoke. Staff tried their best to console her and cheer her up but nothing seemed to be working – that was until Activities Therapist Evelyn Joyce discovered Breta’s love for the Sound of Music. Music therapy would be quite prevalent in the home and the immense importance of it shines through in this wonderful story. When Breta sings it’s as clear as day, her worries fade away and she is in her happy place. This is why Evelyn came up with the idea to host Breta’s very own Sound of Music concert at Ratheane.

Evelyn is very fond of her arts and crafts and brought the home together to create a wonderful puppet theatre featuring Maria, the Von Trapp children, nuns and even Billy the goat to aid the marvellous singing of Breta.

Breta’s friends and family came to see the show along with staff and members of the community, she sang wonderfully along with backing vocals from fellow residents. The whole process has really helped to build Breta’s confidence, she loves engaging with people now and her speech has come on leaps and bounds. We hope to see another musical later in the New Year as the residents just loved it. Well done to Evelyn Joyce on your dedication to your residents and your fantastic work.
